How a Cheap Online Wedding Dress Saved My Budget

Okay so here’s the thing. I got my wedding dress for like two hundred bucks off some Chinese site and honestly? I was terrified. My mom thought I was insane. My maid of honor gave me this look like “are you serious.” But we were on a tight budget and I just couldn’t stomach spending thousands on something I’d wear once. So I took the gamble.

And look—it wasn’t flawless. The tulle is fragile. Like, if you look at it wrong it might snag. But you know what? For our outdoor photos out on that Missouri farm, it held up just fine. We were walking through wet grass, leaning against that old red barn, climbing over hay bales—no tears. It wasn’t until later at the reception, when everyone was hugging me and I was spinning around on the dance floor, that a few little pulls showed up. But by then I was already married and too happy to care.

The weather was perfect that day—late October, that crisp golden light, dry leaves everywhere. Not too hot, not freezing. Just right for an outdoor thing. The venue was this big open farm with the red barn and oak trees and round hay bales in the distance. It felt like home, which is exactly what we wanted.

Some of my favorite pictures are the ones with my crew. There’s one from behind—me in the white dress, arms linked with my bridesmaids in black, plus one groomsman also in black, all of us walking toward the fields. That one gets me every time.

And another one of me and my husband by the barn—he wore this bright scarlet suit and looked so sharp. We were just grinning at each other before the ceremony, trying to stay calm. Those are the moments I really want to remember.

Now about the fit—because I know other curvy brides worry about this. I’m a 38C and ordered a 14. You can’t wear a regular bra with this style, so the bust was kind of off at first.

But we shortened the straps by about half an inch with a needle and thread, and that fixed everything. Seriously, don’t be scared of cheap dresses—a tiny tweak can make a huge difference.

When I put it on, I felt pretty. Not because it was expensive or fancy—it just worked. Lace appliqués, A-line skirt, low V-back, a little sparkly waistband.

Simple but nice. A bunch of guests asked me where I got it, and I told them straight up—China, basically. They were shocked.

I guess what I’m saying is, I didn’t need a perfect dress. I needed one that made me feel good enough to enjoy my day. And it did. The tulle ripped a little, the fit wasn’t perfect out of the box, but none of that mattered when I was standing there with my husband and all my favorite people.

When I look back at those farm photos, I don’t see the flaws. I just see me—happy, married, starting something new. That’s all I ever really wanted.
