Pregnant Bride Alterations Guide: How to Fix a Sagging Lace Bodice

Pregnant Bride Alterations Guide: How to Fix a Sagging Lace Bodice

I got married at 24 weeks pregnant. 5’4”, 175 pounds, short torso, round belly that wasn’t playing hide-and-seek with nobody. Bought a size 16W maternity wedding gown. And lemme tell you, finding a wedding dress for baby bump that didn’t make me look like a beached whale or feel like I was suffocating? That was a whole journey.

First panic: lace. I swore I wasn’t gonna do lace because I just knew it would dig right into my stomach and make me look boxy. But this one—the lace stops high, like right under my boobs, and the rest is just soft flowy stuff that hangs over my bump without clinging.

I didn’t have to suck in for the photos, didn’t have to hold my bouquet over my belly the whole time. I just stood there, belly out, and felt good. My husband said I was glowing, but honestly I think that was just sweat from being nervous—but whatever, it worked.

Now, the real headache. When that pregnant wedding dress came in, the top was HUGE. Like, the lace was sagging and folding over my stomach, making me look way bigger than I actually am. I panicked. My seamstress—bless her—she didn't just cinch it, she actually lifted the whole bodice up, like physically moved it higher on my chest. That saved the whole thing.

If you’re short-torsoed like me, don’t let them just take it in at the sides. Tell them to raise the front so the lace hits your chest, not your belly button. That one sentence made all the difference, and I had to repeat it like five times before she got it.

Two things that annoyed me though, and I wish somebody had told me:

There’s no loop or ribbon to hold the train up. So when you gotta pee—and pregnant ladies pee a lot—you’re literally holding armfuls of chiffon like you’re carrying laundry. I had to bunch it up and waddle to the bathroom, it was ridiculous. Pack a hair tie or a piece of ribbon in your bag, seriously. I didn’t and I regretted it.

And the wrinkles? Oh my god. That chiffon wrinkles if you breathe on it. My bridesmaids and I spent like an hour steaming it, holding it up, trying not to burn ourselves, and we still missed spots. Just pay someone to do it the day before. It’s worth the money to not be stressed out at 11 PM with a steamer and a prayer.

So here’s the thing—everybody told me to size up “just in case” I got bigger. I didn't. I bought my current size at 24 weeks and only needed the top fixed. If I’d gone bigger, the whole skirt would’ve been dragging and sagging, and that’s not fixable. So don’t oversize. Trust your current measurements.

And keep heavy beads or stiff stuff off your bump. Anything hard that sits over your stomach will dig in when you sit down, and it’ll look bulky in pictures. Keep that area soft and simple, trust me.

Also, pick a light skirt. Satin is heavy and hot and you’re already carrying extra weight. Chiffon or something flowy moves with you and you won't be exhausted by the end of the night.

At the end of the day, when I look at my wedding photos, I don't see a “pregnant bride trying to hide.” I see me—round belly, lace on top, flowy bottom, standing tall and not apologizing. That dress let me be comfortable and feel beautiful at the same time, and that's really all I wanted.

So to all my Black mamas-to-be planning their day—don't let nobody tell you what you should or shouldn't wear. Find something that makes you feel like you, bump and all. You're gonna be stunning. Now go get that dress, girl. And pack a hair tie.
