    Mawmaw Finally Found a Mint Green Dress She Loved

    At 81, my grandmother had already decided what she did not want to wear. Finding a mint green two piece outfit she actually loved turned out to matter far beyond the dress itself.

    THE DRESS BEFORE THE DAY

    Sometimes the hardest person to dress is the one who already knows exactly what she does not want.

    MEET MAWMAW

    She was 81, five foot five, and completely unimpressed by beige.

    I've gotten a handful of messages about my grandmother's dress from the wedding, so I wanted to put the whole story in one place.

    Mawmaw. That's just what we've always called her. She was 81 when we got married in May.

    She's five foot five and weighs around 90 pounds, which makes clothes shopping its own special challenge.

    Most things in her size were either cut for a completely different shape or came from the part of the store where everything seemed beige, itchy and overly formal.

    She was not interested.

    THREE STORES LATER

    The lampshade comment ended the shopping trip.

    We went to three stores before I gave up.

    She tried on eight or nine dresses and hated every single one. The kindest thing she said about any of them was that one made her feel like a lampshade.

    At one store a saleswoman brought her a dress with giant shoulder pads. Mawmaw looked at her and said, "Honey, I lived through the eighties once, I'm not doing it again."

    That was when I realized the right dress probably was not going to come from another department store.

    THE LATE NIGHT ORDER

    I ordered it when I couldn't sleep.

    I ordered this one online late one night, the way you do when you're wedding stressed and can't sleep.

    It was a mint green two piece: a sleeveless dress with a matching lace jacket.

    I hesitated over the color because mint can go wrong fast, but the photographs made it look soft, almost like a muted sage.

    I used the size chart and ordered a small.

    THE FIT

    She came out of the bedroom and just stood there.

    It arrived a few days later in a plain plastic mailer, which usually means wrinkles you can't steam out.

    There wasn't a single crease.

    The fabric had a nice weight to it, not flimsy and not heavy. I brought it over to her house that weekend.

    She tried it on and came out of her bedroom and just stood there for a second.

    I asked her what she thought.

    That's high praise from Mawmaw.

    WHY THE TWO PIECES WORKED

    The jacket solved the problem I hadn't known how to solve.

    The small was genuinely right for her, with no alterations needed.

    She's so petite that even small sizes can swim on her, so the fit made a noticeable difference.

    The dress underneath is sleeveless, with a lace neckline dotted with small sequins and a matching lace band at the waist. The skirt falls in a soft A line.

    The jacket has three quarter sleeves and uses the same lace and sequin fabric. It simply slips over the dress.

    No buttons. No hooks.

    Mawmaw runs cold, so she wore the jacket for the ceremony and portraits, then took it off once the reception warmed up.

    ONE OUTFIT, TWO MOMENTS

    Warm for the ceremony. Lighter for the reception.

    Having both options in one outfit made the day easier. She could stay covered when she wanted to and remove the jacket when she did not.

    THE CHECK BEFORE THE WEDDING

    I checked everything because I was determined to find something wrong.

    THE VENUE · PICKETT PLACE

    Pickett Place was beautiful. The front porch became our whole photo plan.

    The wedding was at Pickett Place, a historic home at 438 N Seminary Street in Florence, Alabama. Built in 1833, it has peach colored stucco, white columns out front, curved concrete steps and black iron railings. Our florist draped eucalyptus along the rails and set arrangements of white and yellow flowers on the columns.

    Our photographer was a woman named Jenna. We'd originally planned portraits in the garden, by a fountain and out in a field.

    Then Jenna looked at Mawmaw in her little sandals and said, "Let's just do them here on the porch. The light is better and she doesn't need to walk all over the place."

    I was relieved.

    THE PHOTOS I KEEP

    The ones with Mawmaw are the ones I actually look at.

    One caught her fixing my veil. Another caught us arm in arm while she whispered something ridiculous about my husband. Those became the photographs that felt like the wedding itself.

    SHE LOOKED LIKE HERSELF

    Not dressed up as someone else. Just the version of herself that felt pretty.

    There's a solo shot of her standing by the flower arrangement, looking off to the side, and she looks so elegant.

    The soft mint color worked especially well against the peach stucco, green eucalyptus and white flowers.

    My dress was white. Hers was the color that made the porch feel warmer.

    I wore a white lace dress with a low back and a train, plus a veil and a bouquet of white roses and eucalyptus.

    Mawmaw wore a silver necklace she's had forever. She bought new shoes even though I told her she didn't need to.

    "A girl needs new shoes," she said, and that was the end of it.

    Her little rhinestone sandals were perfect with the mint green outfit.

    WEDDING MORNING

    She borrowed my lipstick and said nothing about it.

    There were six of us in the room, hairspray everywhere, my sister running late and cold coffee on the table.

    Mawmaw was sitting in a chair watching while I was getting my makeup done. The makeup artist offered to do hers too and she said no.

    About ten minutes later she asked if she could borrow some lipstick.

    I handed her mine. She put it on in the mirror, smacked her lips together, said "There," and that was that.

    At one point she looked down at her dress and smoothed the skirt. She said something quiet. I didn't catch all of it.

    I think she said she felt pretty.

    THE DAY ACTUALLY HAPPENED

    She made it through the entire day.

    She sat through the ceremony, stood for portraits, danced one slow song with my uncle, ate two pieces of cake and stayed until the send off.

    I kept checking on her because I thought she'd get tired, her feet would hurt or she'd be cold.

    She was fine.

    That was enough for me.

    THE COMFORT TEST

    After a while, she forgot she was wearing something formal.

    She told me the dress was comfortable and that after a while she forgot she was wearing something formal.

    The outfit worked because nothing about it was fighting for attention.

    A COLOR THAT FELT RIGHT

    The mint was softer than I expected.

    I had worried that mint green might be too bright or too sweet. In person, it was much softer. Against the warm house, greenery and flowers, it felt calm instead of loud.

    The mid calf length turned out not to be a problem at all.

    I had worried about the length because she's self conscious about her legs.

    But the skirt falling around mid calf gave her enough coverage while still letting the outfit feel light and appropriate for a May wedding.

    REAL WORLD WEAR

    The dress had to work after the portrait was over.

    A wedding outfit can look perfect for ten minutes in front of a camera and still become uncomfortable during a full day.

    Mawmaw wore hers from the first portrait through the last dance.

    She sat with my mom's cousins and talked through most of the reception. I don't think she stopped smiling.

    That mattered more to me than whether the outfit looked perfect on a hanger.

    THE PART I DIDN'T EXPECT

    People kept asking about her dress.

    A woman I didn't even know asked where Mawmaw got it. That was the moment I realized the outfit had worked.

    AFTER THE WEDDING

    She wore it again.

    A couple months later she wore the outfit again to an anniversary dinner at her church.

    The women there apparently loved it.

    She called me afterward just to tell me, which she never does, so I knew it meant something.
