Okay, so I had been planning my Sweet 16 since I was 12. Like, actually planning. I had a Pinterest board with hundreds of pins, a notes folder devoted entirely to colors, and more than a few nights spent watching My Super Sweet 16 for “research.” Obviously.

The morning of the party, I cried because my eyelash glue was dried out. Classic. We fixed it, moved on, and somehow everything else fell into place.

The Dress Had to Be Blue

I knew from the beginning that I did not want pink. Everyone does pink. I wanted blue. Sky blue specifically. That soft, dreamy Cinderella blue, but not in a cheesy way.

I tried on maybe 12 dresses before finding this one. Some were too bright and made me look like a Smurf. Some were too dark and felt more like prom than a birthday. Once I had the dress, everything else became much easier. The theme was basically winter wonderland meets Cinderella's ball. The colors were sky blue, white, silver, with a little metallic blue for depth.

The Night I Had Imagined for Years

The party was everything. About 60 people came: family, friends from school, soccer teammates, and people I have known since elementary school.

My dad gave a speech that was supposed to be short but somehow became 15 minutes of him crying and telling embarrassing stories about me when I was five. I loved it.

We danced. We ate. We took so many photos. The photo area with the balloon arch and sequin backdrop was the hit of the night. Everyone wanted pictures there. My friends and I did a whole photoshoot for about 40 minutes. I have 300 photos.

The father daughter dance was Butterfly Kisses. I cried. My dad cried. Everyone cried. It was a lot, but in the best possible way.

If you are planning your Sweet 16 and feeling overwhelmed, here is my advice: pick the dress first. Everything else becomes easier once you know what you are wearing. Your colors, decorations, flowers, cake, makeup, and even your photo backdrop can grow from that one decision.

Do not try to plan everything at once. Start with the dress. If you are drawn to a softer fairytale look, you might also enjoy browsing Cinderella ball gowns.

Sixteen has been everything I hoped for. The dress, the party, the people. Somehow it all came together. Now I have 300 photos, a sore face from smiling, and a sky blue ball gown hanging in my closet that I will absolutely wear again to something. Anything. I do not care if it is a grocery run.
