I never thought I'd be that person. I always figured I'd have years to slowly pick things out—venues, dresses, flowers, all of it. But life decided to speed things up, and next thing I knew we had a date and only ninety days to pull it together. Most of it went fine, actually. Catering? Easy. Photographer? Booked. The redwood forest spot we wanted? Available. The only thing that kept giving me grief was the dress.

I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted. Something soft, lacy, flowy—not too fancy, because we were getting married in Muir Woods, which is all these giant trees and wooden walkways and mossy stairs. I didn't want to look like I was going to a ballroom. I wanted to look like I belonged in the woods. So I spent weeks scrolling through sites, saving pictures, going to shops, ordering a bunch online to try at home. I kept thinking one of them would be right.

Nope. Not even close. Some looked great on the hanger but just hung weird on me. Necklines off, fabric too stiff, or the whole shape made me look like I was drowning in fabric. The worst was the one I'd been obsessing over—I waited forever for it to ship, and when I finally put it on, it was just... wrong. I stared at myself in the mirror and felt totally deflated. I started thinking I'd have to settle for something I didn't really like, because time was running out. Less than a month to go.

Out of—I don't know, desperation?—I ordered one more dress online. I didn't have high hopes at that point. I was just going through the motions. When it showed up, I tried it on with zero expectations. And then—weirdly—it actually worked.

Like, I pulled it over my head and it just felt right. The lace, the tulle, the little cold shoulder sleeves, the corset back—all those details I'd been looking for, they were all there, but it wasn't overwhelming. It was light. And the fit? It was like it was made for me. For the first time in all that trying on, I looked in the mirror and didn't want to take it off. Day-of, I kept things simple. Hair in a loose braided updo, some strands left out, makeup minimal. The wedding dress had an open back, so my tattoo showed a little, which I actually loved. No veil, no big jewelry—just let the dress do its thing.

The ceremony itself was everything we wanted. We said our vows under those huge redwoods, walked around for photos, climbed stairs and crossed bridges. The dress moved with me, didn't get in the way, and the train caught the light in a way that looked really pretty in the photos. Later we went inside for the reception—wooden walls, fairy lights—and the dress fit that vibe too.

Okay, one annoying thing. A few hours into the reception, the strap on one shoulder tore at the seam. I had to tie it in a knot and hook it to another part of the dress, and then it kept slipping down for the rest of the night. Kind of a bummer, but I made it work. The next day we did more photos in the redwoods and the strap held up fine, but I was definitely careful with it.

Would I still pick this dress? Yeah, I would. That little flaw doesn't change how I felt in it. All that stuff about needing to buy your dress years in advance? I found mine at the last minute, when I was practically out of time.

So if you're stressing over finding the right one—I get it. It's exhausting. But trust how something feels on you, not just how it looks in a photo. And if you're doing something outdoors, go for something light. A lightweight tulle wedding gown or a soft lace style can make a huge difference when you're walking through forests, gardens, or other outdoor spaces. Just maybe check the seams when it arrives, so you don't end up tying knots on your wedding night.

I'm still really happy with the photos—kissing my husband on that old bridge, walking up those mossy steps, wandering through the trees. That dress got me through one of the best days of my life, broken strap and all. Looking back, I think finding a wedding dress that matched our location and my personality mattered more than following a traditional timeline.
