Finding the Perfect Rose Gold Gown for Deep Skin Tones

My son and his partner got married in Guadeloupe last year. It was gorgeous, but honestly, the flight was long and it was hotter than I expected. Anyway, before all that, I had to find a dress. I spent what felt like forever scrolling through wedding websites—Brides, Pinterest, wherever. Everything I liked online looked different when I ordered it.

I tried pale pink, champagne, silvery grey. They all made my skin look kind of dull. I remember staring in the mirror and thinking, “This is not it.”

At some point I came across a rose gold dress. It had a warm, bronzy tone. I’m not sure why, but I just felt it would work with my complexion. So I sent a photo to my daughter‑in‑law‑to‑be and asked what she thought. She said, “That’s really pretty, Mom. Get it if you love it.” So I did.

When the package arrived, I opened it in my bedroom. I tried it on and actually liked it—which almost never happens with online orders. The sleeves were sheer, with beads and small pearls, and there was a tulle overlay that went down to my feet. The bodice had some twisted detail that sort of cinched my waist. It felt fancy but not overdone. I remember thinking, “Okay, this might actually work.”

The wedding day itself was a blur. I kept my hair short and natural, just clipped back with a small ivory slide. For makeup, I did bronze eyes and a nude lip—nothing complicated. I didn’t want to spend too much time getting ready.

We took pictures outside some old government building in Basse‑Terre. Red brick, grey columns, lots of green plants around. The light there was really strong. In the shade the dress looked almost champagne, but in the sun it turned more bronze and sparkled. I actually stumbled a little on the cobblestones at one point, but my son grabbed my arm and we both laughed.

Looking at those photos now, I don’t think about the dress first. I think about the heat, the noise, the way everyone was hugging and crying. My feet hurt by the end of the night. But the pictures turned out nice, and I’m glad I wore that rose gold gown. It felt like me—not like I was trying to be someone else.

That’s pretty much it. I don’t have any big lessons to share. If you’re in a similar spot, maybe just trust your gut when you see a colour that feels right. And definitely ask the bride—but that’s common sense. Anyway, it was a good day.
