The Black Sequin Gown I Wore to a San Antonio Gala

I've gotten so many questions about this dress since I put the gala photos up that I'm putting everything in one place instead of repeating myself in DMs. This is the full version: my measurements, the size I ordered, what my tailor changed, how the sequins looked under different lights, what the deep V neckline was actually like, and whether I could survive several hours in it.

Back at the end of January, I was in San Antonio for Escape The Matrix 2024, which ran from January 30 through February 2 at the Henry B. González Convention Center. Most of the trip was normal conference clothing, but the dinner and awards night was black tie, so naturally I spent three weeks thinking about a gown instead of actually reading the event schedule.

My measurements and the size I actually ordered

Stats first, because that's what everyone asks. I'm 5'8" and somewhere between 130 and 135 pounds. I've been professionally measured as either a 32C or a 34A depending on the day, and I cannot explain that either. My waist and torso are around 24 to 26 inches, and in regular US sizing I'm usually between a 2 and a 4.

I wanted the size 2. I really did. But it wasn't going to ship in time for the trip, and I refused to roll the dice on expedited shipping for the most photographed night of the whole week. So I ordered the size 4 in black and accepted that I would be paying for alterations on top of the gown.

The important part is that the gown you see in these photographs is a size 4 that was professionally taken in through the torso and waist before the event. Straight off the hanger, the waist sat loose on me and bloused in a way I didn't like. My tailor only worked on the middle. The shoulders, sleeves and skirt were left alone, so there was still plenty of room through the hips.

That's why I don't think the number on the label tells the whole story with a fitted formal gown. If you're between sizes, compare your actual bust, waist and hip measurements with the size chart, then leave enough time for professional alterations if you need them.

The sequins looked completely different under different lights

The gown is covered in really fine sequins that are pressed into vertical pleats. That means the sparkle runs up and down in lines instead of looking like glitter scattered randomly across the fabric.

I took a ridiculous number of photos for exactly this reason. In the convention center lobby, under bright white overhead lighting, the dress basically read as black with a subtle texture. Once we got into the ballroom and the purple and pink event lighting came on, the whole thing came alive. In some photographs it even looked slightly plum.

None of these photos were filtered or edited to change the color. I just kept handing my phone to whoever happened to be nearby.

The fabric surprised me

I had fully braced myself for cheap fabric. That's usually the catch with gowns ordered online, right? The bodice is see-through, the skirt is too thin, or you spend the entire night pulling at yourself.

This one genuinely wasn't like that. The bodice wasn't see-through and neither was the skirt. The material had real stretch and enough weight that the skirt hung properly instead of clinging statically to my legs. That stretch was probably the biggest reason I survived a four-course dinner in it.

The lining felt nice, the cuffs felt nice and the whole gown had a more substantial feel than I expected. I was in it for hours and stayed comfortable, which almost never happens to me in formalwear.

Long sleeves balanced the deep V

The sleeves are long and sheer, with the same sequin pleating as the rest of the gown. They are slightly bloused at the shoulder and gathered at the wrist.

I normally avoid long sleeves because I run warm, but the mesh was light enough that I didn't overheat indoors. I was also secretly glad to have the extra coverage because the neckline is a pretty deep V. The sleeves kept the whole look from feeling like too much.

The neckline and the bust question

This is the part people keep messaging me about, so I'm just going to be blunt. The bodice already has padding built into it. If you're bigger-chested, you will be showing a lot of cleavage in this gown. The V is deep and the built-in padding pushes everything up and forward, so plan your bra situation around that.

I have the reverse problem. I barely fill anything out, and on me the V looked a little empty at first. I ended up adding my own inserts on top of the existing padding just to give myself some shape. That did the trick.

So my honest advice is simple: fuller busts should expect a low neckline, while smaller busts may want inserts or fashion tape depending on the fit. This is one of those details that's much easier to understand when you see how the gown actually sits on a real body.

The length worked with high heels

I wore really high formal heels, the rhinestone sandals you can see peeking out in a couple of the shots. They pulled the hem up a few inches, but it never reached that awkward too-long-or-too-short place.

The hem grazed the tops of my feet. I could walk, use the stairs and ride the big glass escalators in the lobby without dragging the skirt or having to pick it up. Mine was never hemmed.

If you're shorter than me or plan to wear a lower heel, I would budget for an actual hem. A floor-length gown can look completely different once the shoes change.

Why the long gown made sense for the gala

The convention center was enormous. The main lobby had multiple levels, glass escalators and shiny stone floors, with everyone in formalwear moving toward the same area.

Dinner was held in the Stars at Night Ballroom. The ceiling had interlocking circular rings, with large stage screens and rows of chairs underneath. Everyone was dressed to the floor.

It's the kind of room where a long gown made sense with the atmosphere. I'm glad I went with the floor-length silhouette.

Why I kept thinking about sequin dresses

What I liked about this gown was that the sparkle had structure. The sequins weren't simply covering the fabric with random shine. The vertical pleats gave the surface direction, and the effect changed depending on whether I was standing beneath bright lobby lights, ballroom lighting or camera flash.

Keeping the rest of the styling simple

I kept everything else silver. A little crystal clutch, rhinestone sandals and long drop earrings were basically the entire accessory plan.

My hair went up loosely with a few pieces around my face, partly so the earrings would show and partly because I knew I'd be roasting by hour three. I added a red lip at the last minute, and I'm so glad I did. I tried the whole look once with a nude lip and my face disappeared next to all that black in photographs.

With sequins doing most of the visual work, simple accessories made the outfit feel finished without competing with it.

What I would do differently

First, I would order earlier. I was sitting in a tailor's chair less than a week before my flight, and I do not wish that level of stress on anybody.

Second, I would make sure I had enough time for alterations before the event. The size 4 worked for me because my tailor was able to take in the torso and waist without changing the shoulders, sleeves or skirt.

Third, I would stop trying to force myself into the smaller size just because I liked the number better. The dress in these photos is a tailored size 4. That's the honest answer.
