A NIGHT WORTH DRESSING UP FOR

Apparently, I Was the Red Carpet Moment.

One awards night in Birmingham, one black and gold sequin gown, a coordinated husband, countless photo opportunities, and enough compliments to keep me smiling for weeks.

Black, gold, bronze and one tiny regret.

Double Take

Then my husband decided to match my energy.

And let me talk about my husband for a second because he showed OUT.

I coordinated his whole look around mine: a black and gold brocade blazer, black shirt, gold bow tie, black fedora and polished dress shoes.

When we stood next to each other on that carpet, the whole thing looked planned by a stylist.

And honestly? It kind of was. I'm the stylist.

Every Backdrop Was an Excuse

I was not missing a single photo opportunity.

Outside they had black draping, red roses, a white step out carpet and the green hedge wall everybody wanted to photograph against. Then inside there was another huge backdrop waiting for us.

So yes. We posed everywhere.

No hype. Here's what actually held up.

Zero sequin shedding. I checked afterward. Nothing on the floor, nothing in the car and nothing on my husband's jacket.

The zipper needed patience. There are sequins close to the zipper track, so I eased it slowly instead of forcing it.

The fit photographed beautifully. I don't take that for granted. The stretch and fitted shape gave me a silhouette I actually loved seeing in photos.

For anyone who has ever tried on a fitted gown and immediately felt trapped inside it, the difference between restrictive fabric and stretch fabric is huge. That is one reason I keep coming back to tight fitted prom dresses for curves with movement built into the fit.

A Practical Secret

Nobody knew I changed into slides.

I wore heeled sandals for the main photos. Eventually, those heels started hurting.

So I slipped into my backup slides underneath the floor length hem.

Nobody noticed. I kept walking, taking pictures and enjoying the night.

Ladies, bring the backup shoes. The hem is your secret weapon.

The Real Test

The awards ceremony ended.
But the dress stayed on.

After the ceremony, we went out for a proper sit down meal.

Most formal dresses are in the backseat by that point in the night and you're eating in a hoodie.

Not me.

I stayed in this dress because it was genuinely lightweight and still comfortable after hours of wearing it. Nothing pinched. Nothing dug into my waist. I wasn't pulling the dress down every five minutes.
