A Nashville Wedding at Vanderbilt's Benton Chapel

You know what? I'm still not over that dress. It's been weeks and I still catch myself scrolling through our wedding photos just to look at it again. Which sounds vain, I know. But I spent months stressing over every single option, and when this one actually worked? It felt like a small miracle.

Let me start with the annoying part first: I had to get the hem taken up. Twice. Because I'm 5'2" and apparently wedding dress designers think everyone is a supermodel. The seamstress probably got sick of me. But after that second fitting? It fit like it had been sewn right onto my body.

We got married at Benton Chapel on Vanderbilt's campus. If you've never been there — it's this old stone church with stained glass and dark wood everywhere. Gorgeous, but the floors are legitimately uneven in places. I remember thinking during the rehearsal, "please don't trip, please don't trip." I did trip once during rehearsal, actually. My mom laughed. The coordinator looked terrified. But on the actual day? I walked down that aisle like I owned the place. No tripping. Thank God.

My hair was down in loose curls. I have pretty thick, dark brown hair and Nashville spring humidity is no joke, so I was fully prepared for it to go rogue. It held up okay — not perfect, but okay. I had this crystal headband that I almost returned because I thought it was too sparkly, but my best friend talked me into keeping it. Good call, honestly. The veil had a lace edge and these sheer sleeve things that I didn't think I'd like, but they ended up being my favorite part in photos.

Makeup was simple. I don't wear a lot normally, so I told the artist to go light. She did, mostly. My mom kept saying "more blush, more blush" and I kept saying "no." So we compromised — she got her way slightly, I pretended not to notice.

The dress itself was A-line, all lace, soft tulle train. I didn't want anything poofy because I'm short and poof just swallows me. This one hit my waist right, skimmed over my hips, and made me feel tall. Which is saying something.

My husband wore a pale grey suit and a mint tie. He picked it out in one trip. One. I tried on like thirty dresses. I'm still not over that either.

We did photos all over campus — under that big stone arch at the chapel entrance, along the walkways with those old trees, next to some perfectly trimmed bushes that looked almost fake they were so neat. Inside the reception space, we had these burgundy drapes and warm lights that made everything feel cozy. The dress looked good in all of them, which I was grateful for because I was sweating a little by the end of the outdoor photos. Nashville. May. Need I say more.

People complimented me all day — family, friends, even a couple of tourists walking by who had no idea who we were. One lady yelled "you look beautiful!" from across the lawn and I almost cried. It was sweet but also a little embarrassing because I had no idea how to respond.

Our first dance was nearly a disaster. We practiced maybe twice. I stepped on his foot at least once. He stepped on mine at least twice. We laughed through the whole thing and it was messy and perfect.

Looking back, the wedding dress wasn't just about looking good — though it did that too. It was the one thing I didn't have to worry about on a day full of a thousand tiny things to stress over. It fit, it moved, it held up. That's all I really needed.
